DZT
established in 2012, live and work in Albania and Italy.
We were supposed to run a diary during our residency period at Atelierhaus Salzamt and afo architekturforum oberösterreich. During the development of our project here in Linz we decided to integrate the blog into our artwork “renting it” to an NGO working with asylum seekers and refugees, because we were developing a project about United Europe borders and migrants, using as main focus the deconstruction of the EU anthem (Beethoven’s Ode to Joy). We would like to host this organization on the blog for the period of our residency (till December 23rd) asking them to post everyday information, photos and whatever you may think it could help people to understand better the asylum seekers and migrants situation nowadays. After several attempts we failed due to the lack of time and people to work on this thing – according to what the NGO answered us – so in the very beginning we decided to leave the blog white…or better black as the etching ink we used to realize some prints that were part of our project.
Then we decided to publish the work for the effort of all the people who helped us in the making of There Must Be Something in Between.

It is hard to write about a work that is political without being political. That being said, yesterday Stefano Romano (1/4th of DZT collective) was saying that the intention of their art practice is to make works function act like doors, doors which lead to other worlds and readings and paradigms. They ask us to see the context we are dealing with, to really perceive it. In the process of working with part of the DZT collective here in Linz, Austria over the past two weeks, I have seen how a certain idealism is necessary. I have come once again to believe that things are possible, and even in little time. The state of the EU or the state of any country, mine included, is no longer a matter to be toyed with a distance. Activism and art making are not the same but they do cross and share a domain which I believe this project inhabits. Nonchalance which was once acceptable and even admirable, a certain abstractness the aims of our work, a certain escape through Art is increasingly absurd. We live together, we breathe so closely, this same air, is not possible to not be political. Antonio Negri writes in “Letter to Silvano on the Event”1: “The crisis of the revolutionary event is tied to the failure of revolutionary story-telling, and only a new story-telling will succeed in determining, let’s not say a revolutionary event, but even its thinkability. Art is today put to the test on this point, on the relation between event and story-telling.”
There Must Be Something in Between asks that we take time for recognizing patterns, proportions, sensations, positions.

During the making of There Must Be Something in Between we also felt the necessity to think about something more “light” and that’s why we also started a new on going video-series named “Haiku”. The first video was entirely filmed in Linz.
